A keychain like this is very easy to make. We recommend using a combination pliers and a beading needle, possibly together with a reverse needle. If jij don’t have it yet, jij can also find it among our tools. First, a musket hook is supplied per keychain. It is a hook with a closed bail that jij can use to make the keychain using satin cord.

Jij take the satin cord and fold it in half. Now jij have a loop on one side and two ends on the other. At the bottom of the musket hook, as mentioned, there is a half‑round part. We will attach the cord to this. Jij take the satin cord at the loop side and thread it a little through this opening. Then jij take the ends, pass them through the loop and pull tight. Below jij can see an example with a round keyring, but this principle applies in the same way to the musket hook.

Jij can now start threading beads onto this. Optionally, jij can tie a small knot at the top before jij start threading and pull the beads over it. We usually don’t do this ourselves because we prefer to use smaller beads and the knot can’t be hidden well here. Besides, we think it adds little to a creation like this. An extra knot here doesn’t add any extra quality or security. It actually adds nothing except possibly a knot that is difficult to hide. After jij have threaded all the beads onto it, we still need to tie a knot. For keychains we recommend not using a flat knot. The ends then tend to point left and right. What jij do is lay an e‑shaped loop on the table, then pass the ends through this loop.

First, gently pull this toward the beads. Then make sure the beads sit as tightly as possible on the cord against the keyring. Next, with your other hand, slide the knot up as far as jij can and tighten it. This method of making keychains is a real must‑have skill. The first time jij may need a little practice, but the more often jij do it, the easier it becomes. Cut the ends about 1 cm past the knot. Another tip: briefly burn the ends with a lighter. I often light the lighter and, in a smooth motion, quickly run the ends through the flame. This prevents your keychain from fraying.
